THE COLLECTIONS

The Collections

Over a year of new commissions and events at The Yard’s new building and across Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. New work by artists including Antony Gormley, Ed Atkins, Janet Kay, Carroll Thompson and Jeremy Deller, in partnership with organisations from Gainsborough School to V&A East, East Bank and Colour Factory. Made with local partners from a primary school in Hackney to the cultural institutions of East Bank. Sculpture, music, dance, art. Many free.

The Collections is The Yard’s first dedicated fund for work beyond theatre, supported by a Major Project grant from Arts Council England.

There’s more to be announced. Stay close.

Domain CIII

Antony Gormley has put a sculpture on the roof. Permanently.

A sculpture on the roof of The Yard Theatre, in dialogue with the sky, above Hackney Wick. Now installed. Permanently.

“Here is a Domain, a subtle presence hovering against the sky, witnessing the comings and goings of the yard at The Yard. This work is both a transmitting and receiving device. It reflects light and captures the thoughts of the viewer, asking us to consider our dependency on the built world.” - Antony Gormley

Free workshops for secondary school students begin Autumn 2026.

Antony Gormley’s sculptures, installations and public artworks investigate the relationship of the human body to space. Permanent works include the Angel of the North, Another Place at Crosby Beach and Exposure in the Netherlands. He was awarded the Turner Prize in 1994, knighted in 2014 and appointed a Companion of Honour in 2025.

Yard Young Artists Studio

Gainsborough School, Jeremy Deller, and MATT+FIONA are designing the studio.

Jeremy Deller works with architect educators MATT+FIONA and the children of Gainsborough School to design the young artists’ studio on the theatre’s first floor. A space for young artists, designed by young artists. Built by them. Workshops from Autumn.

Jeremy Deller is an artist. He sometimes makes films and works in public space, often with members of the public. He won the Turner Prize in 2004 and represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 2013. For the 2012 Olympics he made Sacrilege, a life-size bouncy Stonehenge.
MATT+FIONA is a social enterprise founded in 2016 by Matthew Springett and Fiona MacDonald. They trust and support young people to create more inclusive and representative spaces, through integrated processes of designing, making and building. They have worked with over 80 buildings and installations and nearly 10,000 young people across the UK and Europe.

Union and Contact

Ed Atkins makes an entrance.

A permanent installation for the entrance to the theatre, entitled Union and Contact: a curtained bit of the world, an interval to compress and decompress within, a clinch between the theatre and everything else. Reveal date announced soon.

“It’s been wonderful to be invited into the world of The Yard, and entrusted with making a piece to stand in perpetuity on — and as — its threshold. The art I make is often performative, almost always theatrical, and reflexively so; it’s terrific to get to fold it into a context I so often cite, and so deeply adore.” - Ed Atkins

Ed Atkins is a British artist living in Copenhagen. Solo exhibitions at Kunsthaus Bregenz, Martin-Gropius-Bau, Castello di Rivoli, Stedelijk Museum, MoMA PS1 and the Serpentine Gallery. In 2025 a mid-career retrospective opened at Tate Britain. He is the author of A Primer for Cadavers, Old Food and Flower, all published by Fitzcarraldo Editions.

The Music is Black: Back to the Future

The Music is Black: Black to the Future. Part of East Bank’s The Music is Black festival.

A free day of Black British music, across two venues in one Yard. Part of East Bank’s The Music is Black festival.

It started in the theatre. Conversations with Richie Brave, Elijah and Janet Kay. Black British music from its inception to the present day, and to the future.

Then the courtyard. Sets from Elijah, To The Left, Felt Sound System, Sippin’ T and Headtops from 3pm. Janet Kay and Carroll Thompson sang Silly Games and Hopelessly in Love, live. Two of the voices that made lovers rock, in one Yard. Curated by Cassie Leon.

The day spilled next door. Colour Factory, our neighbour in Queen’s Yard, opened their terrace from 5pm with plentyppl, CasuallyClued and Marvin Jupiter.
