The Yard Theatre, Trustee recruitment
The Yard is a space to explore new ideas, to nurture new talent and to share new experiences.
In 2011 a group of volunteers, led by Jay Miller, converted a disused warehouse in Hackney Wick, into a theatre, bar and kitchen.
The Yard provides a safe space for artists to grow new ideas, and for audiences to access outstanding new work. A multi-award winning theatre, The Yard is committed to:
1. Exposing stories from the edges of society.
2. Interrogating the process of writing for performance.
3. Discovering and developing new artists.
In our short existence we have had significant success. This includes two transfers to the National Theatre and numerous awards including two Peter Brook Empty Space awards. Success has also led to partnerships with leading theatres/organisations; recent project partners include the Young Vic, Royal Court, Theatre Clwyd, HighTide and Clean Break.
“The most important theatre in east London” Time Out
Bordering Tower Hamlets and Hackney, and next to the Olympic Park, The Yard is in a rapidly changing part of the UK. We are a key part of the fabric of Hackney Wick, a recognised and respected grassroots venue that has grown with the community since 2011. In 2016 The Yard was asked by the London Legacy Development Corporation (local authority) to manage neighbouring community centre Hub67, built to respond to a resident call-out. Hub67 has already welcomed over 4,000 local residents to enjoy creative activities and share experiences.
“The Yard is a vital local cultural anchor” London Legacy Development Corporation
The Yard is fast becoming one of London’s most diverse and exciting venues for experiencing new music. We provide a safe, consistent space and platform for events that are organised by and for under-represented groups in London’s cultural landscape. Working with nationally renowned and new collectives, we host over 100 music events each year which fill our bar with people dancing until the early hours.
“Hackney Wick’s current go-to spot” Time Out
The Yard’s success is due to our model for developing artists and new work, the way we bring local residents and audiences into the making process, and our business model which sees us maximise earned income in order to reduce dependence on subsidy.

With plans to move to a new building, we are entering a period of capital development that will secure a long-term home in Hackney Wick. We are about to enter a hugely exciting new phase and are looking for individuals who share our ambitions and want to join us on this journey.
