The Yard is moving…

We had a huge response to yesterday’s statement. We’ve been overwhelmed by the reaction and are grateful for all the messages of support. We wanted to make sure there was no misunderstanding so we’ve sought to clarify a few points below.

What is happening?

The Yard will be moving to a new building within Queens Yard, we will not be closing.

When will this happen?

We don’t have a definite timeline but nothing will be happening until 2018 at the earliest.

How will it affect your programme?

It won’t. You can expect us to run as normal right up until we vacate our current building and begin a programme in our new space.

Are developers shutting you down?

No. We’re working with the owner of Queen’s Yard and the LLDC to develop and plan our new building.

In 2011, a dedicated group of volunteers, led by Jay Miller, built a theatre in a disused warehouse in Hackney Wick. We called it The Yard. We made Hackney Wick our home.

In five years, we have supported thousands of artists to create work that we don’t think can be found anywhere else in London.

We have opened our space, our hands and our hearts to new theatre makers, musicians, performers, DJs, chefs, dancers, poets, comedians and many more.

We listened. We responded.

We created a space where artists and audiences are valued and challenged.

We created work that we think is important, unapologetic and new.

We kept our doors open so that everyone can enjoy and share these experiences.

Over the coming years, the surrounding area – our home – is going to undergo some dramatic changes.

As part of these plans our current building will cease to exist.

But we hope this will provide us with the opportunity to build something new…

To start a new phase for The Yard.

To ensure grassroots culture remains in Hackney Wick.

To take what we’ve learnt and grown over the last five years and create a new space.

If you would like to chat to us more about this, if you have any thoughts or comments you’d like to share then please email our Executive Director, Lucy, on

We’re very much at the early stages of this process (see the full planning application here) but we want and need you to be part of it.

Thank you for all your support.

We look forward to continuing on this journey with you.
